Secrets, Secrets, Secrets
If you ever buy an old home, you know going into it there will be something that will be uncovered or at least you should. When you buy one that was a rental for years and was left vacant many more, you hold your breath. Haha!! Yes we had an inspection but if you have bought a home and gotten an inspection, you know they always let you know that they inspect what is visual. This means that they cannot inspect what they cannot see. They can’t see what is under the floors or hidden under appliances, behind walls, etc. You WILL find things and we found some great ones in this house. The worst (besides the asbestos tile) was hidden in the hall bath. Any guesses (besides the brown water in the toilet)???
We started demolition on the hall bath by taking out the toilet and vanities. Then moved on to the tile. Boy that tile was stuck in there and took a lot for it to budge. I guess the pink tile wanted to hang out. I really thought I had taken some “during” photos of the bathroom demo but I guess I was in such awe that I didn’t snap any pictures. We completely removed everything from that bathroom. We had to get down to the subfloor in order to put in new tile. The following picture is from the corner of the hall looking back into the master. Yes we also took the closets out of the Master bedroom. (I have cool things planned for that area so stay tuned).
This picture is taken from the Living Room area looking all the way through to the Master.
So here is what we found under the tile. This was the area under the shower. Back when these houses were built, they did not put down moisture barrier like Durock. You now lay a barrier so that it doesn’t rot out the subfloor if you have a leak. I was so amazed when they pulled up the tile and found this huge rotted out hole. There apparently was a leak under the shower and had to have been going on for years. I am surprised someone didn’t fall through the floor. Wow is all I can say. I’m glad we took up the tile. We will repair the subfloor and floor joists to fix everything. Then we will put down Durock to attach the tile to and be on our way.
Wow that was a big hole!
One last picture of the bathroom from the Master Bedroom. Can you believe that you see all the way through the house? Crazy huh! Can’t wait to show y’all more of the demolition and reveal more of the plans for the renovation.
Thanks for stopping by!
